Bungee Jumping Dubai

Bungee Jumping has it's origins in an ancient tradition. The idea comes from the ancient ritual "Gkol" performed in the Pentecost Island in the Pacific Archipelago of Vanuatu. The legend says that in the village Bunlap a man called Tamalie had a quarrel with his wife and she ran away and climbed a Banyan tree where she wrapped her ankles with liana vines. When Tamalie came up to her, the woman jumped from the tree and, seeing that she survived, her husband followed.

The men of Bunlap were very impressed by this performance and they began to practise such jumps. This practice transformed into a ritual for rich yam harvest and also for proving manhood. Modern bungee jumping as we know it today actually started on the 1st of April ( Fools' Day ) 1979 when group of people from the Oxford University Dangerous Sport Club, impressed by a film about "vine jumpers", jumped from the 245ft Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England using nylon, braided rubber cords instead of vines. Dressed in their customary top hat and tails, they performed a four man simultaneous jump. Bungee-mania had begun.

Tried and Tested: Bungee Jumping at Gravity Zone
Test your nerve against the latest addition to the UAE’s extreme sports scene.

by Stacey Siebritz

Bungee jumping is usually reserved for bucket lists. Indeed, flinging yourself from a tall structure while connected by seemingly little more than a stretchy rope attached to your ankles is usually right up there with sky-diving or swimming with sharks – a way of doing something kind of crazy to mark an exceptional occasion. However, in Dubai we’re used to the extraordinary becoming a part of the everyday. Now, thanks to the arrival of GravityZone, a company partnered with the renowned UK Bungee Club, a bungee jump can be just another weekend activity.

What do you need? Wear casual, comfortable clothing and securely fastened shoes that aren’t going to interfere with the ankle harnesses. Glasses and hard contact lenses are a no-no, although soft contact lenses are fine. Also recommended: a willing entourage of supporters to cheer you on as you jump from a height of 165 feet.
